Tundra Winds’ Baruff of Taigaro (official AKC name)
Today we lost our beloved Baruff, the Ol’ Icebear, at the age of 13 years, 7 months and 22 days.
Baruff was born in Allenspark, CO, USA in the famous Tundra Winds’ kennel, bred by Kent and Donna Dannen. Together with his litter sister Sterre he travelled with us from Denver to Amsterdam in a Sherpa bag. Although he was first owned by the breeder of our first Samoyeds, it became obvious that he was not happy there. He came to live with us in the sledding season, so he could run in our team, but in the end he stayed with us forever. Where he belonged with his sisters and later granddaughter.
Baruff would not run single lead, but next to his sister Sterre, it was a golden combination. With those two in lead, we ran our first Nordic Open in 48 minutes! It was not only our first Nordic Open, but also Baruff’s first time in the snow ever.
Baruff had the most sweet character you can imagine. We never ever heard him growl to Berber, or Berber to him, they even slept on the same dog bed together! It feels good that he is going to join his big friend on the Team Snö cloud now, although tears are running while writing this. Children absolutely loved him and he adored them! There is a story of his legendary dad Bruin, who ran of an obedience trail once, because he saw a little kid in the audience. Baruff would have done the exact same thing.
For a long time we thought, as they were born on the same day, that Sterre and Baruff would die on the same day too. But while Sterre is still a very active dog, Baruff turned into a very, very old dog. Could hardly walk his walks and having days that we thought … o well, every dog owner knows how that feels. He seemed to be doing a lot better the last couple of weeks, but last night it became clear that the end was near. And quite honestly? We have seen it in his eyes already. We knew that he knew ….
Baruff has kids and grandkids in all over Europe and his lines even spread out to Siberia! We are sure that his great character and working abilities live on in them.
So long, ouwe IJsbeer! We will miss you like hell and Sterre has to cope moving on without her litter brother. But she has Aspen and Danica to come to terms with this. Please say hello to Ezrah, Robaika, Berber, and Chanouka for us.
Especially for you, Baruff: America the Beautiful! Sung by Barbra Streisand … because you are a Jewish dog after all.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
Till we meet again! Will, Anita & Team Snö
